The #1 Way to Achieve Your Goals

Instead of making you wait until the end of the article to find out what I’m talking about, I’ll just get right to the point.

The #1 way to achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of in your life is to LOOK where you’re going!

It seems obvious. Overly simplistic. Silly, even.

But really and truly, you cannot get anywhere you want to go without focusing on what you’re aiming towards.

Yes, there are other steps (you have to take action, for example), but before you do anything, you have to be clear about where you’re going.

Lots of times, we decide we want something, focus on it briefly, then let all our fears, self-doubts and obstacles get in the way. We get distracted. We find something else that seems better, easier, more fun and focus on that for a bit.

I used to be the poster child for that “method” of living. I even referred to myself as a “jack of all trades, master of none” to ward off any suggestions that perhaps I was not getting anywhere in my life because I wasn’t making a choice.

And don’t get me wrong, I can focus with the best of them. In fact, sometimes I hyperfocus to the point of shutting out the world around me.

However… the hyperfocus was short-lived. I would research until my eyes burned and then, feeling I had gotten the information I needed, would promptly shift my focus to something else. So, nothing every felt truly complete. And I never like I was really accomplishing the BIG stuff in my life.

I believed that I was alone in this belief, until I started noticing that my clients also tended to shift their focus in much the same way as they changed clothes each morning. I realized through various EFEL and coaching sessions that as soon as the focus came back into place – “What is my purpose? What is my why?” – all of a sudden, those out of reach goals became easily within grasp… for all of us.

Some of you may not really know what your life’s purpose is… and that’s okay. Just pick something that lights you up and start on a journey towards that thing (even if it seems distant, ridiculous or impossible). If you can think it, you can achieve it.

Yes, really.

So, here’s my challenge to you:

FOCUS on one thing. Make that your sole (and soul) purpose.

If your mind wanders (and it will), bring it back. Imagine your life the same way as you do when you are setting up a golf shot (that one’s for you, FIL), finishing a tough WOD (that one’s for all my CrossFit friends) or getting the perfect triple combination line in your stadium jumping round (for all you riders out there).

Don’t allow for distractions.

Don’t make excuses.

Don’t let fear/discomfort/failure/peer pressure/anything cause you to shift your focus.

This will be challenging, at first, don’t get me wrong. But it also might be the most powerful choice you ever make.
